Remember to take safety precautions when moving

June 22, 2010 - Moving can be a physically strenuous activity, so it's extremely important that all of the necessary safety precautions are taken in order to avoid an injury, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons said.

There is always some risk for physical injury when a person is moving, the AAOS said. Whether someone is emptying overhead cabinets or transporting heavy furniture, there is a chance that they could hurt their back.

AAOS spokesperson Arya Nick Shamie said that "most of us have heard 'lift with your legs not your back,' but sometimes people don't know what that means." The doctor suggests asking for help lifting or moving items if a person is struggling to get it off of the ground.

In 2007, close to 22 million people made a doctor's visit because of back pain, the AAOS said. That same year, there were 4.8 million trips to the emergency room due to back ailments. Focusing on posture while moving can help avoid back injuries.

When moving, consumers should also take other safety precautions into consideration, such as the weather when driving a rental truck. Many consumers aren't used to driving such a large vehicle and should be sure they can handle it.
