Most Americans still aim to own a home

February 15, 2011 - A new survey shows moving to a newly bought home remains a goal for many Americans, especially younger consumers.

Harris Interactive conducted an internet survey on behalf of Trulia.com, showing that 70 percent of Americans still consider homeowner to be a significant part of their American Dream. Interestingly, the youngest Americans - those between 18 and 34 - had the most favorable attitudes toward owning a home. Twenty-six percent of those respondents said their view of homeownership grew more positive over the past six months, while 18 percent of consumers between 35 and 44, as well as those between 44 and 54, felt that way.

Still, most consumers have longer-term relocation plans in mind, with 50 percent saying they plan to buy a home more than two years from now.

"Contrary to popular belief, the American Dream of homeownership has not turned into an American nightmare. In fact, we're seeing a national resurgence of buyer and seller activity on Trulia.com," said Pete Flint, CEO of Trulia.

Low prices and affordable mortgage rates could be helping more consumers reach their dream of owning a home. Freddie Mac reported 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates climbed above 5 percent last week, which may encourage more consumers to hire moving companies before rates rise much higher.
