Census data shows Texas, Nevada gain residents

December 23, 2010 - Since 2000, large numbers of Americans have made relocations to Texas and Nevada, according to the latest government data.

Revealing the results of the 2010 Census, the Commerce Department announced that Texas has picked up the most new residents since 2000, with more than 4.2 million people moving to the Longhorn State over the past 10 years. Texas' population ballooned to roughly 25.1 million in that time, still behind California (37 million) as the country's most populous state.

Despite its recent real estate problems, Nevada also enjoyed a significant relocation surge over the past decade. The state's population rose by 35.1 percent to 2.7 million, recording the highest population gain by percentage in the country.

Wyoming earned the title of the nation's least populous state with only 563,626 residents, though that figure did grow 14.1 percent since 2000. Michigan was the only of the 50 states to lose residents, with its population dropping 0.6 percent. Puerto Rico - a U.S. territory - also lost 2.2 percent of its residents.

The South and West saw their populations increase 14.3 and 13.8 percent, respectively. The nation's total population climbed 9.7 percent to more than 308 million residents.

Most recently, home sales in Texas may show that relocation activity has slowed somewhat. For instance, the Houston Association of Realtors reported that year-over-year home sales in that market were down 22 percent in November.
