Philadelphia experiencing increased moving activity

October 13, 2010 - The number of people moving into the city of Philadelphia has increased in recent years, according to a new report.

The Pew Charitable Trusts' Philadelphia Research Initiative analyzed the moving activity that occurred between 1993 to 2008 and determined that while more people are leaving the city, that pace is slower than the rate of people who are relocating. The number of Philadelphians moving out of the city peaked in 1995 at 20,284, but has since dropped to 9,864 in 2008. The city has experienced a 60-year population decline, but the report said that it appears that the trend is slowing.

"These changes in migration patterns are significant, and they have gone largely unnoticed," said Larry Eichel, project director of the Philadelphia Research Initiative and the author of the report. "Our main finding, that the city has been losing fewer residents in recent years, lends support to recent estimates from the U.S. Census indicating that Philadelphia's population has increased slightly during the past decade."

Still, people are packing their moving boxes and leaving Philadelphia at a high rate, possibly to look for better employment opportunities. August data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that Pennsylvania lost 16,900 jobs from July to August.
