Nation's universities prepare for students moving to campus

August 10, 2010 - As the new school season approaches, many college towns across the U.S. are bracing for an influx of students relocating to dorms and campus housing.

The University of Georgia in Athens instituted a "Hunker Down with Housing" program in 1998 to help ease congestion and transition students into their new residences, reported the UG website. Volunteers from the university student body and faculty will be helping the 7,000 students arriving this week as they move into dorms and housing.

Cooperation between the campus police, parking services and the county government will keep roads free for moving trucks and vehicles. There will even be a team on-hand to help students connect their computers to the university network.

At Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, the school administration has gone a step further to help incoming students beat the summer heat.

Montgomery's WSFA-TV Channel 12 reports that not only does the university have plenty of water and snacks handy, but it also has a team ready to help students actually move their boxes upstairs.

"What we try to do is ask that the parents not have to carry more than one load upstairs," Faulkner University's Cindy Walker told the station.
