Moving especially difficult for kids, says expert

June 8, 2010 - For children, moving into a new home can be a confusing and unsettling experience. Parents can take steps to make the move smoother for kids of any age, said a Massachusetts pediatrician.

"They're missing where they've been, they're missing their friends, and things are confused for a while," Dr. Michael Posner told Springfield news station WWLP-TV. Posner suggests talking about the move with kids early on, and letting older children get involved in the planning. Parents should provide as much information as they can about the new location, especially if it's farther away, he added.

Posner also suggests reducing unnecessary changes during moving, like toilet training or getting rid of children's old bedroom furniture. "Don't make changes that you don't have to, the kids are going to be changing plenty" already.

After the move, give kids the time to adjust to their surroundings - they won't immediately like the new place even after these measures, said Posner.

Moving can be especially difficult on teenagers because they're more firmly rooted in their communities and with their current group of friends, he explained.

After moving, set up the kids' room first and try to maintain old routines to preserve familiarity, suggests KidsHealth.
