March 4, 2011 - When relocating to a smaller property, baby boomers and older homeowners today are faced with the daunting challenge of selling their homes in a buyers' market.

A report in the Boston Globe recommends these sellers put an emphasis on making home improvements before listing the property. Since they may have lived in the property for decades, homeowners will need to consider upgrading paint, furnishings, floors and design elements. The process could take a long time, so the source recommends setting aside weeks or even months for making home improvements. In addition, hiring a professional stager can help ensure the home has been updated with modern tastes, since it's often a younger buyer who's considering moving into the property.

In some cases, remodeling one's home can actually be a therapeutic experience, helping homeowners remove some of their emotional attachment to the property and making the relocation process even smoother.

"It's really difficult for people to go through, facing all the stuff they collected," Barbra Weisman, a Concord real estate agent, told the paper. "You can be walking through an emotional minefield with couples."

A separate report finds that once they've finally moved on from their old home, many baby boomers are looking for a much more active lifestyle compared to seniors in the past. Experts told the Chicago Tribune boomers are forcing developers to re-think the way they design adult-oriented communities.
