How to make moving easier for children

August 6, 2012 - When families have to move into a new home, it can be challenging to get children settled in. Here are some tips that can make relocating less stressful for everyone in the family.

Before visiting open houses, families are advised to make a wish list for their new home. This can be as simple as seeking homes with an extra bedroom, more storage space or a larger yard, while many families also seek out specific destinations or locations, like those located close to schools and parks.

While bringing young children along when searching for prospective homes may not seem ideal, it is important that parents do include them in the selection process on some level. Together, families can discuss which houses are their favorites, which will likely make kids more excited to start moving boxes in.

Children will also be more thrilled about moving if they have a say in their new room's decor. This can be more difficult if children have to share bedrooms, but will generally help kids feel more settled and proud of their new living space.

Before moving services come to move furniture and boxes, it is important to have some sort of goodbye party for school friends and those in the neighborhood. Be sure to get contact information and later, make keeping in touch a priority.
