Highest-paid IT workers are in California

July 6, 2010 - Information technology workers may want to consider moving to Silicon Valley when looking for a job.

That's because the salary for IT workers in that area is significantly higher than those of other regions, reported the Journal of New England Technology. Tech employees in Silicon Valley earned an average of $96,299 per year, besting competing markets in Washington D.C., New York, Seattle, and Boston, according to a survey by Dice Holdings. Yet many companies in Silicon Valley have reached their hiring and space limits, researcher Rebecca Loveland told the Journal.

"They're looking to other regions of the country to expand," she told the paper.

Workers in Washington had the second highest annual average salary, coming in at $89,014. Boston held that spot in 2005 but has now slipped to fifth, paying its IT workers $85,121, said the report. Even though salaries are lower in that city, the cost of living in Boston is significantly cheaper than other tech regions, said the Journal, citing Sperling's BestPlaces. Experts expect tech salaries in the Bay State to rise.

Among other factors, workers in the IT field should weigh salary, cost of living, job challenges and creativity before deciding where to work and live.
