Globalstar relocating to Louisiana

July 15, 2010 - One of the world's largest telecommunications companies is moving its base of operations to Louisiana.

Globalstar, which operates a collection of satellites that provides service to mobile phone users, will move its product development center, customer care headquarters, and other corporate offices from Milipitas, California to Covington, Louisiana. The relocation is a "big win" for the city, said Governor Bobby Jindal.

"This is exactly the kind of company that we positioned Louisiana to secure when we created Louisiana FastStart in 2008 and enhanced our digital media incentive program in 2009," he said. The state will provide funds to help with the company's relocation and offered a commercial lease subsidy and tax credits that Globalstar CEO Peter Dalton found "too compelling to ignore."

Ground control for the company's satellites will remain in California. The move will bring Globalstar physically closer to its most recent corporate acquisition, Covington-based Axonn. That will reduce pre-production costs and the time it takes for new products to hit the market, said Dalton.

Moving cross-country could be a daunting task for Globalstar staff and executives. Hiring a reliable moving company or conducting a self-move with a mobile storage unit are a few options that could save them time and money.
