D.C., Boston listed as top cities for jobs

January 11, 2011 - As more Americans widen their job search, many are moving to economic hubs where employment opportunities are more prevalent.

A report in Forbes highlighted 10 major U.S. cities where local job markets are flourishing and employment is generally more stable than in other parts of the country. At the top of the list was Washington, D.C., which has an unemployment rate of just 6 percent and benefits from a bounty of government employers and contractors. Boston is also promising for a high number of technology and financial firms, which not only yield a large volume of jobs but also plenty that are high-paying.

Austin, Texas, came in third and has weathered the economic downturn better than most cities, said the report, while the Twin Cities in Minnesota remain a top destination of retail, tourism, manufacturing and personal services employment. Oklahoma City, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, New York, and Hartford, Connecticut, rounded out the top 10.

On the flip side, buyers may want to avoid relocating to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Diego and Detroit, which were included in a list of the nation's worst jobs markets.

In an attempt to hang on to top prospects, employers may be willing to shell out more money for relocation assistance this year, according to CareerBuilder. The company reported that 33 percent of employers said they would be willing to pay for their worker's moving needs in 2011.
