Comfort is key when moving with pets

June 8, 2010 - Moving can be hectic for everyone - especially family pets. But there are ways to ease the transition.

Keeping pets comfortable during the move will lead to a more positive experience, Humane Society volunteer Jo Ann Beehler wrote for the Lynchburg News and Advance. Keep cats in a well-ventilated carrier with a litter box for long trips, she suggested, adding that dogs should be given breaks to stretch their legs and relieve themselves.

The ASPCA warned against feeding animals inside a moving car, and encouraged bringing bottled water from home to prevent upsetting their stomach. Don't allow dogs to put their head outside the window during the drive - it can cause ear damage and lung infections, said the ASPCA.

Update pets' ID tags with new contact information before the move, so that the pet can be found in case he goes missing during or after moving day, said Beehler.

At the new home, pets should be kept in a "safe room", wrote Beehler, with familiar items and scents that will comfort the animal. Owners should then slowly introduce their pets to different areas of the house and neighborhood, so that they can gradually familiarize themselves with their new environment.
