Certain cities better for jump-starting a career

October 12, 2010 - Moving for work is a popular option for many Americans, especially for those who feel their current position is less than fulfilling.

For these workers, moving to a new city and getting a fresh start could be the best option. Using unemployment, personal income, cost-of-living and small business data, the Daily Beast found that many Americans might want to consider relocating to Houston, Texas. The city ranked as the best in the nation in which to start a career, because the cost of living there is low while Houston offers a wealth of job opportunities for relocating families.

Two other Texas cities - Dallas and Midland - were included in the top five, while Omaha, Nebraska, ranked second and Washington, D.C. finished fifth. Other major cities such as Seattle and Pittsburgh were included in the top ten.

The report added that many workers nationwide were spurred into relocating and finding a new career because of a significant life event, such as a death or a new child, that gave them inspiration. The relocations were rarely, if ever, impulsive.

A separate report earlier this year could also point to the popularity of North Dakota as relocation destination. According to Portfolio.com, the state had the country's most significant job growth over the past five years.
