Americans say they're keeping green improvements in mind

March 31, 2011 - Whether they're moving into a new home or improving their existing one, more Americans say they're thinking about ways to reduce their environmental footprint.

A survey by the American Express Spending & Saving Tracker showed more consumers are looking to renovate their home this year compared to last. According to the report, 64 percent of consumers said they were planning renovations on their new or existing home, up from 62 percent last year, though they added they want to spend less on those upgrades. Americans were only willing to budget an average $3,400 toward renovations this year, down from $6,200 in 2010.

Additionally, 32 percent said their improvements sought to make their homes more energy-efficient. Most new homebuyers said they were installing greener doors and windows, new insulation or roofing, or better heating and ventilation systems.

"Our survey revealed that consumers are investing in green improvements to increase their savings over time and choosing to handle renovation projects on their own to save now," said Pamela Codispoti, executive vice present and general manager of Consumer Card Services, American Express.

Families hiring moving services may also keep those concerns in mind when shopping for a new home. The National Association of Realtors reported pending home sales increased 2.1 percent in February.
