Relocation activity may sway political spectrum toward GOP

December 21, 2010 - Large numbers of families have been leaving states like New York and moving to Texas and Florida over the past few years, and experts say that may have a large impact on the country's political landscape.

Once the Census Bureau reports the results of its population survey, it is expected that states such as Texas and Florida will see their populations surge while others - especially New York and Ohio - will see theirs shrink, reported NPR. The upshot for politicians is that Texas and Florida will gain more seats in the House of Representatives, since those figures are determined as a ratio of the state's total population. By losing residents, New York and Ohio could see their Congressional representation shrink by two seats, one estimation predicts.

"Upwards of 17 to 18 states, probably at a minimum, will see a change in the number of congressional districts and representatives they get," Kimball Brace, president of Election Data Services, told NPR.

That could help Republicans in future elections - including the 2012 presidential race. Their traditional stomping grounds are the ones most likely to gain residents, and therefore representatives, said the report.

Many Americans have been packing their moving boxes and heading to Texas and Florida for their looser tax restrictions and affordable homes. Forbes included three Texas cities in a list of the 10 most affordable communities nationwide.
