Thomas Pynchon's former Manhattan Beach apartment is up for grabs

June 30, 2011 - The former home of reclusive author Thomas Pynchon is on the real estate market for the first time in 20 years, according to Curbed.

Pynchon was a renter in the Manhattan Beach spread in the 1960s and 1970s, and former landlords and friends claim that at least some of his highly lauded novel Gravity's Rainbow was written in the space. A photo of Pynchon's hand and his pink pig pinata was also allegedly snapped on premise, the source reports.

The home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and 1,176 square feet of living space. Built in 1931, the Spanish-style ocean-front property has beautiful views of the beach. The structure is separated into two living spaces, with a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment on the second floor, and a smaller one-bedroom, one-bathroom on the first level that is perfect for renters, according to RedFin.

It is not clear when Pynchon enlisted the services of a moving company and hightailed it for the East Coast, but the author has been living the anonymous life in New York for some time. With J.D. Salinger already deceased, Pynchon seems like the last man standing in the realm of elusive literary giants. Perhaps his cult following will help the homeowners with the sale.
