Improving credit score prior to relocation

October 13, 2010 - Before a person starts looking through the real estate section of the Sunday newspaper, a number of steps must be taken.

One of the most important elements is to be aware of one's credit score.

This score, which can fall between 300 and 850, can help determine a person's annual percentage rate on their bank loan when purchasing a home. However, this score can be negatively affected through a number of situations, such as if a person has paid a couple of credit card bills late (or not at all).

Many financial experts have suggested people pay off their credit card debt prior to looking for a new home, which will improve one's credit score.

But keep in mind that having an active credit card is beneficial as well.

Greg Daugherty of Consumer Reports magazine told WRAL.com that "keeping up with your payments can be good for your score."

Those who do get their debt down to nothing may also want to hold on to their card, even if they don't plan to use it.

"Available, unused credit is one of the key components of your credit score," Daugherty said.
