Congresswoman backs broadband expansion

February 3, 2010 - One California politician is pushing for a reduction in high broadband internet bills, which may be good news for prospective homebuyers.

Representative Doris Matsui was giving a speech at an event sponsored by Washington DC think tank Third Way and argued that "millions of Americans simply can't afford to pay up to $40 a month for broadband services."

"Americans also need affordable and convenient internet access for educational purposes, to compare healthcare options, and to obtain emergency information - and everything in between," Matsui said.

Last September, Matsui introduced her Broadband Affordability Act, which would require the FCC to establish a broadband assistance program for certain homeowners and renters.

Reducing the cost of broadband internet could help more people get into a new home, particularly when it's coupled with the government's tax break for both first-buyers and some qualifying existing homeowners.

Though Matsui's bill isn't law, those who are in the relocation process may want to look at their broadband internet options in the areas they may move to in an effort to garner the best deal.
