Report: Worst case housing jumps 20 percent

February 4, 2011 - A new study sheds light on the dearth of affordable housing communities available nationwide for low-income families making relocation plans.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development released the results of its Worst Case Housing Needs 2009 report, which analyzed the number of low-income households in the country that did not receive government housing assistance and paid more than half their monthly income to rent costs, lived in substandard housing, or both. The report revealed 7.01 million Americans fit that classification in 2009, the most recent year for which data was available, an increase of more than 20 percent from 2007 and 42 percent from 2001.

At the same time, government programs have helped many families afford the costs of moving into subsidized or otherwise affordable housing.

"The report shows a clear link between unemployment and housing needs and that's why the president has been so focused on creating jobs," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. "A growing economy and new jobs, combined with HUD's new commitments to produce and preserve affordable rental housing is what we need to reverse this trend."

One of the most well-known housing assistance programs is Housing Choice Rental Vouchers, which pay a portion of a tenants' rent in an apartment through a government subsidy.
