Moving Guide - Moving with your Pet!

Horses
Moving with your horse may be a big concern when considering how much work is involved. However, rest assured. With careful planning anything is possible. You can hire a horse transporting company, transport them by air or even move them yourself in a trailer connected to your vehicle. Here are our recommendations of how to properly prepare for your horses’ move:
  • Before moving with your horse it will need to have a “Coggins Test” and prove negative at least 6-7 months prior to the departure date. The Coggins Test examines the horses’ blood sample for exposure to the virus causing Equine Infections Anemia. This is an extremely serious and fatal disease that is transmitted by flies and can be passed on from one horse to another.
  • Be prepared to show proof of your horses’ health certificates and rabies vaccinations with dates administered.
  • Map out your course of travel on a personal map or website to figure out an ideal route to take when driving with a horse and trailer. Attempt to avoid high traffic areas or going down bumpy roads.

Packing for your Horse
The following items are suggestions of what you should pack when moving with a horse:
  • Grain
  • Extra hay
  • Flashlight
  • Trash bags
  • Any supplements
  • Buckets for drinking
  • Additional chains for trailer
  • First Aid kit
  • Filled water jugs
