Underlayment

Sunday, February 13, 2011 - The subfloor provides overall structural support and strength and the underlayment creates a level surface and helps prevent squeaks, uneven floors wear on vinyl and sheet flooring and even keeps the finish on wood floors from cracking. Most floors come with a specification on the thickness the underlayment should be. Use the correct one or the warranty on the flooring may be void.

Underlayment for different floor types can vary. For example, underlayment for vinyl or wood floors is 1/8" or ΒΌ" thick plywood. For ceramic tile a thicker underlayment is needed, usually cement board.
