Increased numbers of Americans were moving in 2009

May 12, 2010 - Despite, or perhaps because of, an ongoing recession, Americans moved from one residence to another in greater numbers last year than in 2008.

That's according to new numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau which reports that 37.1 million people moved in 2009 - up from the 35.2 million who moved the previous year. This means 12.5 percent of the population 1 year and older were moving during 2009.

Unemployment did seem to play a role in people's decision to change their residence. According to the figures, 20.9 percent of those who were unemployed had moved during the course of the year compared to 12.5 percent of those who were getting a paycheck.

The figures also found that economic livelihood also played a factor, with those living more than 100 percent below the poverty line were more likely to be moving (23.6 percent) than those living at between 100 and 149 percent of the poverty line (17.5 percent).

Underwater mortgages - a case in which a homeowner owes more on the property than it is worth - could be one factor in the increase in movers last year, but there may be signs of hope. According to recent statistics from Zillow.com, home prices in a number of key California markers like Los Angeles and San Diego saw improvement over the last 10 months.
