Williamsburg renters can say "the more the merrier"

December 11, 2010 - Renters in Williamsburg, Virginia, looking to share the cost of living expenses with more roommates may be in luck as the city increased its occupancy level.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the Williamsburg city council increased the legal allowance on the number of renters in a residence to four unrelated occupants, up from the current three.

This change has been approved in several of the city's zoning districts and will be limited to dwellings that are at least 2,000 square feet, states the news source.

The three person restriction took effect in 1991 in an effort to maintain "the single-family character" of the neighborhood, reports the AP.

First time renters have a lot to think about before signing the contract on their rental property. One consideration to make is how much to spend on rent. It is advisable to spend approximately 25 percent of your income on rent.

Another thing to remember is to get everything in writing. Make sure that all promises and requests are made in writing and that you keep a copy of the correspondence for yourself.

Consider buying renters' insurance. This will cover your belongings in the case of damage or theft.
