Home-based workers may be eligible for tax deductions

February 25, 2010 - Individuals who are planning on relocating to houses with home offices may be able to claim deductions on their tax returns.

Entrepreneurs who start home-based businesses may be able to write off some of the out-of-pocket expenses that directly impact their companies, Bright Hub reports. This may include pens, paper or other office supplies, so these individuals may want to consider keeping original receipts to verify purchases of these items.

Home repair and maintenance of an area devoted to a home office may also be deductable, as long as this region of a house is used exclusively for business. Professionals who work in their dining rooms, for example, cannot claim the deduction because they may also use this space for eating and entertaining.

Utility bills that are incurred by a home business - such as internet, telephone and electricity costs - may also be written off if they are not shared by family members. As a consequence, home-based workers may want to consider paying for additional phone lines for their businesses, as they could end up saving them money in the long run.

Professionals whose duties can be completed at home might want to consider moving into a home office, as they may able to save money on their bills and time on a commute.
