Wealthy Americans moving south

July 1, 2010 - If middle-class Americans were wondering where the "other half" wants to move, the answer is Florida and Georgia.

Forbes recently analyzed information from the Internal Revenue Service and came to the conclusion that not only do wealthy Americans like the warm weather, they also want to live in places where the taxes are minimal.

The most popular place was Collier County, Florida, according to Forbes. More than 15,000 people moved to this area during 2008, and the average amount of money a person living there makes is just over $76,000 a year. Emigrants mostly came to this southern state from other areas of Florida, as well as Illinois, Michigan and New York.

Another popular destination is Greene County, Georgia, Forbes found. This small area of just under 16,000 saw close to 800 people move there during 2008. Other hot spots for the wealthy include Llano County, Texas and Walton and Nassau counties in Florida.

While moving to areas such Florida and Texas may help the wealthy trim their budgets, it might not be good for their waistlines. Between 25 and 30 percent of adults in these states are obese, the Trust for America's Health found.
