New housing option for Californians with mental disabilities

July 2, 2010 - For homeless people who require treatment for mental illness, a California agency has an option.

The California Housing Finance Agency announced a 70-unit development in the Hollywood Business Improvement District called Villas at Gower. Thirty-five of those units will be devoted to housing low-income people with psychiatric disabilities and their families, said the agency. With help from the California Department of Mental Health, CalHFA will offer financing and provide access to treatment and services.

"In todays tough economy, it's important for us to provide housing options for the people of California, especially to those in need of supportive services," said CalHFA executive director Steven Spears.

The development should be completed by the fall of 2011 and will be located at 1726 North Gower Street. California's Mental Health Services Act Housing Program will provide $7 million in financing.

Villas at Gower is just one of 25 facilities that will use $44 million in funding to develop and build rehabilitative and supportive housing around the state.

The new complex could provide a huge relief to families of individuals who don't have a home and struggle with debilitating mental illness.
