More affordable housing made available in Santa Fe

June 18, 2010 - If consumers have held off on moving to Sante Fe, New Mexico because the cost of living was just too high for them, they should know that soon more affordable housing will become available.

Last week, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Santa Fe Mayor David Cross broke ground on a new affordable housing development in the downtown area. Close to 150 homes will become available to city residents.

This new housing project will be set aside for senior citizens and low-income families, Richardson's office said. The first two sections of the development should be ready for tenants by June 2011.

Richardson said that "this is a great project for New Mexico. It's creating new affordable housing in Santa Fe, it's revitalizing the downtown area and it's providing jobs for the construction industry when we need them the most."

This affordable housing development will also be LEED-certified, Cross said.

There are many steps a person can take to green their new home, including switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs, installing Energy Star-certified appliances, and putting solar panels on their roof.
