Funds provided to improve transportation around affordable housing

October 21, 2010 - Those moving into low-income housing units around the country should have access to efficient and sustainable transportation options, say officials from two government agencies.

That concept spurred the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Transportation to award a combined $68 million to communities around the nation to finance better city planning. Strong infrastructure around affordable housing communities would not only improve the environmental sustainability of those communities, say the agencies, but also put families in those homes closer to employment opportunities.

"With the investments HUD and DOT are making today, we are strengthening neighborhoods by connecting housing with affordable and sustainable transportation choices," said DOT secretary Ray LaHood. "This is a win-win for people who live in these communities because they will have travel options to better serve them."

Communities both large and small can have access to the funds to develop better transportation options and stronger infrastructure for low-income families moving into affordable housing units. The funds also encourage the preservation of low-income housing near new transit stations.

The state of California received the largest portion of funds, splitting almost $6 million between four state agencies. The state also recently received $80 million in awards from the Treasury Department to build more options for families that are moving into affordable housing units.
