Corporate relocations boost housing in Detroit

July 19, 2010 - For a city that has been hit hard during the housing crisis, it's a positive sign any time a new company is moving into town.

Officials in Detroit expressed cautious optimism that a handful of companies that are relocating to the city could help boost the regional housing market, reported the Detroit News. In August, Quicken Loans will complete a move of about 1,700 employees into the Compuware Building in Campus Martius. It will share the property with another recently relocated company - Fathead.

"We're focused on growing our businesses and, at the same time, growing Detroit's business footprint," said Quicken CEO Dan Gilbert, adding that a new subsidiary, InHouse Realty, will "help redefine the city and lead the charge to Detroit 2.0 – a city built on the brain economy."

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is considering relocating its 3,000 employees to the city as well, according to the Detroit News report. Incoming corporations have created a mini-Renaissance of sorts for Detroit restaurants and shops, which are opening new locations and expanding.

Those transplanted employees would benefit from buying moving insurance to protect their belongings during the trip to the Motor City.
