Attorneys claim toxins are seeping into California neighborhood

April 28, 2010 - Some residents of Carson, California recently learned the importance of thoroughly researching an area before planning a move, as some attorneys are claiming that this area may be infested with toxic chemicals.

Homeowners in the 50-acre Carousel neighborhood, which was once the site of Shell Oil tank farm, have reported incidences of tar-like liquid leaking into their lawns and a constant gasoline smell in their neighborhood. Testing from the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board confirmed that soil and groundwater in this area holds high levels of carcinogenic chemicals and methane gas.

An official from the Center of Health, Environment and Justice said that high levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene "poses serious risks for homes and any place where it could reach the public."

Potential health problems such as cancer, neurological damage and birth defects are associated with this and other chemicals found in the area. There are 285 homes in the area that could be affected by this contamination, and these individuals have been warned to avoid contact with soil in their yards until the issue has been resolved.
