International moving tips

November 4, 2010 - International moving nearly always requires good organization and appropriate planning to minimize mishaps during the relocation process.

To facilitate the international move, North American Van Lines suggests that those looking to relocate start the international moving process by considering which possessions will be shipped, which can be thrown away and which will accompany the mover. Once that is established, the company recommends contacting the moving company seven to 10 weeks prior to the moving day.

Remember that perishables and plants cannot be shipped internationally. Likewise, hazardous materials such as paint and aerosol cans and firearms are not allowed, notes the company.

Moving charges vary with the type of service the individual purchases, but those relocating are responsible for any customs clearance charges and any taxes or duties, states North American Van Lines.

When choosing an international moving company, it may be important to do some research to select the company. The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) states that International household goods movers are nearly always required to be licensed by the Commission as an Ocean Transportation Intermediary.

It may be a good idea to contact the Commission directly to make sure that the moving company is licensed by them.

The FMC also suggests that the moving company conducts an on-site inspection of the items to be moved and provides a written estimate of the cost of the move.
