Proper insurance coverage needed when moving to Atlantic coastal region

June 18, 2010 - Insurance is just one of the many costs that need to be considered when moving to a new area. However, when a person relocates to a home in the Atlantic coastal region, they also need to make sure they have adequate coverage against hurricanes and windstorms.

Between June and November, homes in states ranging from Maine to Florida are especially at risk of incurring damage from windstorms and hurricanes, according to the Insurance Information Institute. With more development taking place in these coastal areas, the number of claims likely to be filed is sure to rise.

As a result of more people moving to homes in the Atlantic coastal region, the number of insurers including storm damage percentage deductibles instead of more traditional ones is rising, the III said. These are calculated based on the insured value of a home.

When moving to a region that is prone to hurricanes and wind storms, consumers should also buy materials to use during the event of a natural disaster. These can include storm shutters and an emergency disaster kit.
