Preparation necessary for those in hurricane-prone areas

June 2, 2010 - Consumers moving themselves and their small businesses to more hurricane-prone areas should take the proper steps to protect their property.

Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and to help Americans prepare for this type of natural disaster, the U.S. Small Business Administration and Agility Recovery Solutions launched a website devoted to emergency preparedness.

SBA Administrator Karen Mills said that "regardless of where you live, it's a good idea to be ready for any kind of crisis. Every threat, from wind storms, floods, wildfires and earthquakes, to power outages and computer system failures, reminds us to be proactive when it comes to building strategies to survive a disaster and recover quickly."

If a consumer is moving their business or home to a high-risk hurricane area, the SBA encourages them to have a written emergency response plan, adequate home or business insurance, and a disaster survival kit. Flood insurance is also necessary when living or operating a business in these areas.

The National Flood Insurance Program provides the largest number of policies to homeowners in the U.S. However, it was suspended on June 1, and it's not yet known when it will be reinstated.
