Another suspension for National Flood Insurance Program

June 2, 2010 - People moving into high-risk flood zone areas should know that for the fourth time within the span of one year, the National Flood Insurance Program has expired.

On May 31, the NFIP expired and it's not expected that new policies will be written until at least June 7, Insurance Journal reports. That is the earliest Congress is expected to tackle this subject again. The flood insurance program was suspended due to lawmakers' inability to reauthorize legislation tackling it before they left for a break.

The legislation before Congress would extend the NFIP until the end of 2010 if passed, according to Insurance Journal. The timing on this expiration isn't ideal for homeowners moving into high-risk flood zone areas since hurricane season officially began on Tuesday.

Charles Symington, senior vice president of government affairs for the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers, said that "the series of temporary extensions, last-minute actions, and service lapses during such a delicate period in the American economy is troubling to agents, homeowners, and small businesses.

When moving to an area that is prone to flooding, consumers should always make sure that their home insurance includes covering damage from this sort of natural disaster.
