Study: Many prospective renters looking for green buildings

April 21, 2010 - Large numbers of apartment seekers are looking for units that take the environment into account, new research suggests.

A recent survey from Apartments.com found that 88 percent of potential renters consider the environment when choosing their new home. However, the results indicated that a lack of eco-friendly amenities is not a deal-breaker for most renters, as only 18 percent said they would choose not to live in a unit that was not considered green.

Instead, many residents of apartment complexes are choosing to make environmentally conscious changes to their everyday habits. For example, approximately 84 percent of renters said that they turn off lights, computers and appliances when they are not in use, and 70 percent use energy-efficient light bulbs.

Many developers are beginning to include sustainable features in new units, such as energy-efficient windows and appliances, recycling programs, non-toxic paint and automated payment services.

Individuals who wish to save money by adopting more sustainable practices may do so by closing vents when they are not in use, installing power strips, using air purifiers and hanging wet laundry instead of putting it in the dryer.
