Boston mayor announces home repair and maintenance projects for public housing

March 19, 2010 - Boston residents who live in public housing will soon benefit from a home repair and maintenance initiative that is intended to make the facilities more energy-efficient.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced a $63 million plan to refurbish the city's public housing developments in order to reduce energy costs, create jobs and decrease carbon dioxide emissions.

The buildings will receive will receive more efficient toilets, showerheads and faucet aerators, sustainable lighting fixtures, electric heating and cooling systems, photovoltaic power generators, fiberglass windows as well as cooling roof membranes. In addition, an education, training and employment program will be launched to help residents promote sustainable living.

Residents will also have the opportunity to participate in an education, training and employment program that is intended to help them reap the benefits of sustainable living.

Project officials believe renovations will save the city $56 million in energy costs over the next 20 years, employ 600 individuals and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 13,000 tons per year.

The project, which will affect approximately 4,300 apartments in 13 developments, is slated to begin this summer.
