Flushing, New York

Flushing, New York is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens that gets regular mentions in both New York Magazine and The New York Times because of its diverse ethnic cuisine. There are busy Starbucks, Burger Kings and Dunkin Donuts, along with food options that you may not be used to eating. There is a lot of Asian cuisine in Flushing, Queens; typically, there are restaurants that serve traditional Korean, Chinese, and Taiwanese dishes in addition to more modern and fancy Asian fusion plates. Just follow one of the food guides published by one of the big-time NYC publications where you will discover tips to eating around this cultural neighborhood. Even celebrity chef and good critic with the Travel Channel’s “No Reservations” Anthony Bourdain has made a pit-stop in this affluent Chinatown. On Bourdain’s food tour of the neighborhood, he stopped at the Golden Shopping Mall, a two-floor maze-like food court. There he ate like a king with nothing over $10. Here, he dined on fish balls, noodles, lamb, flatbreads and charcuterie. Their next stop was Xi’an Famous Foods, where Bourdain and his chef friends munched on crisp flatbread filled with lamb seasoned cumin. On the side, the group had pickled jalapenos and noodle dishes. At the end of the day, they visited one more location, which makes up some of the cuisine options in Flushing, New York.

Flushing, New York was founded in 1645 by the Dutch. “Flushing” comes from a city called Vlissingen in the Netherlands. Dutch colonists originally bought this land from the Matinecocks in the 1620s. The English took over Flushing in 1664 and renamed the city Vlissingen to its modern-day Flushing. According to English colonial history, Flushing was the site of the first commercial tree nurseries in North America. The town also participated in the Battle of Long Island on the British side of things. During the 1800s, the population of Queens and the rest of New York grew significantly becoming a very prosperous town. Due to new bridges that connected Flushing to the rest of the city and the construction of the Long Island Railroad in 1910, Flushing quickly became an area filled with restaurants, businesses and residential properties.
