From shopping malls and open spaces to museums and theatres, the list of things to do in Jersey City is endless. Boasting one of the most diverse populations in the U.S., Jersey City plays host to an array of ethnicities, and is a popular moving destination for people of different backgrounds and cultures.

History:
In 1812, steam ferry service began; and in 1820, Jersey City became an incorporated city. The Morris Canal extension to Jersey City was created in 1836. That same year, two railroad lines arrived in the city, expanding its transportation and distribution potential. From 1860 to 1870, Jersey City's population rocketed from 7,000 to nearly 30,000, a tribute to the economic strength of the city's factories. Among the immigrants arriving through Port Jersey were Polish, Germans, Irish and Italians. Before and during the Civil War, Jersey City was a significant station on the Underground Railroad for escaping slaves. Following the Civil War, activity centered on struggles between rival railroads and political infighting caused government difficulty. In the 1870s, the first paid fire department was created and the first public high school opened. And in 1910, railway tube between Jersey City and New York City opened. Jersey City's population peaked at almost 3000,000 in 1950. Residents and businesses were lured to the suburbs and city began to shrink began in the late 1950s. In response, by the late 1980s, Jersey City had become the ideal site for businesses fleeing high rent and other excessive business costs in cities like New York City.

Economy:
Jersey City is located in the heart of the New Jersey metropolitan area. The area underwent an economic renaissance in the 1990s, and the growth trend continues today. Traditionally reliant on sectors such as transportation and distribution, the city is now focusing on the finance, insurance and Real Estate sectors. High rent, taxes and utility costs in nearby Manhattan have prompted many New York firms to relocate operations across the Hudson River to Jersey City, creating what is commonly known as "back office space." Since the early 1990s, numerous major corporations and firms have relocated or begun new operations in Jersey City. Jersey City has no corporate or payroll tax, no city income tax, no commercial rent tax, and 30 percent lower utilities than New York City. Not to mention, rent on office space is about a third less than in Manhattan. The Jersey City Economic Development Corporation, a nonprofit corporation formed in 1980 by the city council, is the main business proponent of the city and administers most of the business incentives and job training programs.

Tourism:
Start your adventure by booking a cruise to Ellis Island, or take a stroll in one the city’s historic neighborhoods for a reenergizing afternoon. Next, check out one of Jerseys City’s gorgeous city parks, or head over to Liberty State Park. The history buffs will enjoy the Harsimus Cemetary or explore the remarkable remnants of the Underground Railroad. Jersey City adventurers can also take advantage of the enormous number of things to see and do in the greater metropolitan New York City area. Some of these include the Bronx Zoo, the Statue of Liberty, Madison Square Garden and the Empire state building.
