Economy:
The citizens of Springfield and the city government are committed to continuing to revitalize the city, grow the local and regional economies and provide an area ripe for companies to flourish. The city is also very interested in keeping things “green” and Springfield residents are focused on sustainability programs and accepting building projects, which strives to be Leadership Energy and Environmental Design or LEED certified. The industries that employ the most people in Springfield are Education and Health Care; followed by Government, Retail and the Hospitality industry. Springfield is home to the Headquarters of the Bass Pro Shop and many companies like Kraft Foods, 3M and Solo Cup have manufacturing facilities there. Tourism:
Millions of tourists visit Springfield every year. Those visitors can delight in the many free things to do around the city. Civil War buffs may enjoy taking the Battle of Springfield driving tour, which includes 12 markers in remembrance of the events that took place. Adults and children alike will enjoy learning about butterflies in the Butterfly House at Close Memorial Park. The Creamery Exhibition Hall showcases art from local artists with new works shown each month. From 6:00 – 10:00p.m. the first Friday of each month, you can take a stroll through the downtown arts district to enjoy completed artwork as well as live art demonstrations, live music and other fun activities. At the Gray/Campbell Farmstead visitors can tour the log cabin that was once home to John Polk Campbell, the nephew of the John Polk Campbell who founded the city of Springfield.

History:
Springfield was first founded by John Polk Campbell in 1829, and it was officially incorporated in 1838. That same year when the United States Government forcibly kicked the Native Americans out of the Southeastern states, they began their journey westward passing through Springfield on Military Road as they went. This exodus became known as the Trail of Tears. The Trail of Tears National Historic Tour still goes through Springfield and can be experienced via car. In 1858, this same road offered stagecoach service all the way to California. In 1860, Springfield had its first telegraph service and the street changed names to Old Wire Road – the name by which it is still known today. By August 10, 1861 Civil War had come to Springfield, MO in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. The first Union General to be killed during battle died there. In 1862, the Battle of Pea Ridge was fought.

  • Bob Barker, long time host of "The Price is Right," has a street named after him in Springfield.
  • Some gas stations and restaurants from the time of the inception of Route 66 in 1926 are still open today.
  • The first color television series to be filmed outside of Hollywood or New York City was taped in Springfield. It was called Five Star Jubilee and it showcased Country Music stars.
