Moving to Massachusetts
You're moving to Massachusetts! As you are packing and researching Massachusetts moving companies, why not learn more about this exciting city that you will soon call home.

As one of the oldest settlements in British North America, Massachusetts was the location of the eruption of the American Revolution. The state was also associated with the movements to promote public education, reform the care of the mentally ill, abolish slavery and restrict immigration. At the close of the 20th century, Massachusetts continued to be a national leader in business, politics, higher education, medicine, high technology, environmental protection, and the arts and sciences.

Capital City: The capital city of Massachusetts is Boston.

Population: Currently, 6.6 million people reside in Massachusetts - most of which are Boston residents.

Local Activities: Whether you are looking to soak up some culture or seeking to get in touch with nature or just bond with the family, there are countless adventurous things to see and do throughout Massachusetts. With its beautiful harbors nestled throughout 30 miles of rocky coastline, North of Boston is considered a refuge for beach lovers. With its rich history, the North of Boston is the perfect destination for those interested in cultural activities and history, such as Salem Witch Trial attractions, art museums and the many sites dedicated to the area's nautical heritage. Massachusetts is the home of an unmatched collection of cultural and educational institutions. Attractions such as the world-renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra offer traditional season of concerts in Symphony Hall, and summer activities include the Boston Pops and free concerts on the Esplanade.

Economy: From its beginnings as a farming and seafaring colony, Massachusetts became one of the most industrialized states in the country during the late 19th century and, more recently, a leader in the manufacture of high-technology products. Massachusetts's rise as a center of manufacturing began in the early 1800s, when cottage industries developed in small farming communities. Large factories were built in towns with waterpower, and the country's first "company town," Lowell, was built in the early 1820s to accommodate the state's growing textile industry. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, the state supplied the nation with a large majority of its shoes and woven goods. Massachusetts's gross state product ranks 11th largest among the states at $287.8 billion, to which general services contributed $79.9 billion; financial services, $73.9 billion; trade, $42.2 billion; manufacturing, $34.4 billion; government, $26 billion, transportation and public utilities, $16.1 billion; and construction, $13.5 billion.

State Bird: The state bird is the black-cap titmouse.

State Tree: The American elm (Ulmaceae Ulmus Americana) is the state tree.

State Flower: The mayflower (Epigaea repens) is the state flower.

State Song: "All Hail to Massachusetts" is the state song, which was written by Arthur J. Marsh.
