History:
Originally named “Bridgewater” by the English, the name was changed to North Bridgewater in 1821 and finally Brockton in 1874 in honor of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, who was famous for English military successes in Canada against the French. City status followed in 1881 and Brockton soon became synonymous with shoe and leather production, hence the nickname “Shoe City”. Over the next several decades Brockton became internationally recognized for several historical firsts – the first airship flight, the first electrically wired theatre, the first underground electrical cable delivering electric power wherever required – the list goes on and continues to this day.

Economy:
The Brockton city planners are dedicated to fostering economic growth. They have devised a well thought out plan which is being implemented throughout all city departments and ordinances, and is in collaboration with external partners. The Brockton 21st century Corporation has interests as do the Brockton Redevelopment Authority and the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. Also an active member of the Gateways Cities coalition, Brockton has joined ten other regional cities to form this commonwealth. Their main objective is to address challenges as they occur through innovative planning and a collaborative approach. The intended target is to jump-start the economies of the eleven member-cities and trigger regional growth and prosperity.
