Cambridge, Massachusetts

Located across the bridge from Boston, Massachusetts, Cambridge is an exciting and eclectic city, with neighborhoods ranging from classically historic to modern and trendy. The city is the home to two of the most prestigious colleges in the nation and this tends to give Cambridge both an academic and a fun side to it. Anyone moving to Cambridge will surely find just the right area for them.

Economy:
The median household income for Cambridge is higher than the state average. The cost of living in Cambridge is very high, much higher than the national average. The unemployment rate there is low at only 5 percent. Harvard and MIT are the top employers in Cambridge. Other top employers include Novartis, Biogen Idec and Genzyme. There are several other, smaller biotechnology firms there as well. Companies that maintain offices there include Google, Microsoft and IBM. There is a video game company, Harmonex Music Company, there, and several smaller software companies.

History:
The first settlers in the area were Puritans who had come from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were seeking a spot that would be easily defensible from the Charles River. John Winthrop chose the area of Cambridge in 1630. The settlement was known as Newtowne and soon had a school and a marketplace. Harvard was started in 1636 to train young men for the ministry. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington had his headquarters in Cambridge for a year. Cambridge became a city with the current name in 1846. The potato blight in Ireland brought many Irish immigrants to the area in the middle 1800s. The city grew and attracted more industry. But after the First World War, many of the companies closed or moved, and Cambridge became more and more of an intellectual community. MIT moved there in 1912. Today the city has a rich diverse culture that is rare.

Tourism:
Historic areas and buildings are common in Cambridge. The Cooper-Frost-Austin House was built in 1681 and is the oldest building in Cambridge. Built in 1761, the Christ Church of Cambridge is still used as a church. Longfellow National Historic Site was home to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and was used by George Washington headquarters during the Revolutionary war. There are many wonderful museums to tour in Cambridge. There are over twenty different festivals held in Cambridge each year and in every month of the year.
