Worcester, Massachusetts

Relocating to Worcester, Massachusetts, should make sense for anyone who cares about quality of life issues. Ranked 9th in Forbes.com’s list of the “America’s Most Livable Cities” in 2009, Worcester outperforms many mid-size cities based on cost of living, education, employment, income, leisure, and crime rate. Noted for its highly educated and politically aware populace, Worcester boasts quality schools, affordable housing, reliable public transportation, robust economic planning, and diverse recreational and cultural offerings. Professionals involved in biotechnology and life sciences research are moving to Worcester due to its proximity to distinguished medical facilities and teaching hospitals and the city’s significant investments in biotechnology research. Worcester’s consistent ranking in many “best cities” lists is truly well-deserved.

Economy:
Historically a manufacturing and educational hub for the New England region, Worcester has evolved to become a leader in information technology, healthcare, biotechnology and medical research. The explosive growth of healthcare and medical research is due primarily to the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In addition to the expansion of its biotechnology and medical research sectors, Worcester remains competitive in the manufacturing, distribution, service, retail and trade industries. The education and medical fields account for 38 percent of all jobs in the city. The largest employers in the Worcester region include EMC Corp., University of Massachusetts Memorial HealthCare, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Bertucci’s Corp. and Fallon Community Health Plan. A solid indication of Worcester’s economic stability is the growing number of companies that are moving to Worcester, drawn by the city’s strong academic and technical education resources, research facilities, manufacturing base and highly skilled workforce. With all of these exciting opportunities, it's no wonder why so many Worcester moving companies are so busy.

History:
Two attempts to settle Worcester had failed before it was resettled for the third time in 1713 by Jonas Rice, who went on to be elected to the General Court of Massachusetts but died before he could serve. Worcester was incorporated as a town in 1722 and named the shire town or county seat of Worcester County in 1731. Because of its strategic New England location, Worcester served as a munitions depot during the American Revolution. In 1776, newspaper publisher and author Isaiah performed the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in front of Worcester City Hall. The opening of the Blackstone Canal in 1828 enabled a faster way to trade with Providence, Rhode Island, and brought prosperity to Worcester. Soon, new settlers were moving to Worcester to seek their fortunes. Worcester was chartered as a city in 1848. Worcester became a hub of numerous railroad and stage lines because of its central location in the Northeast. This unprecedented accessibility and strategic location contributed to making

Worcester a hotbed of reform during the socially and politically tumultuous mid-19th century. In particular, Worcester was at the forefront of three reform movements that have forever changed American society and culture: temperance, abolition and women’s rights.

Tourism:
Rich in history and natural beauty, Worcester offers plenty of choices for leisure, culture and recreation. Explore over 400 acres of oakwood, fields, streams, marsh and swamp at the Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary. Discover the wonders of the natural world through EcoTarium’s interactive environmental science exhibits, wildlife habitats, extensive grounds and digital planetarium. Watch world-class concerts, national comedians and popular family shows at the state-of-the-art Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts. Pay homage to the brave men and women who gave their lives for the country and for democracy at the Massachusetts Vietnam War and Korean War memorials. When all that traveling has made you hungry, try some of the excellent fine and casual dining options on Worcester’s restaurant row on Shrewsbury Street and in the Canal District behind Union Station.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • The birth control pill was invented by a team of researchers from Worcester’s Clark University.
  • The origin of the city’s name is still largely unresolved. Some say “Worcester” comes from the “Wegeraceaster,” the Saxon word for “war castle,” while others believe that the city takes its name from the Battle of Worcester in 1561.
  • Worcester is one of only six cities in the United States to be honored with the All-America City Award five times by the National Civic League.
