Moving to Washington
Washington is the most northwestern state of the US. It has a land border with Canada to the North, Idaho to the East, Oregon to the South and a marine border with the Pacific Ocean to the West. The state's climate is mainly Mediterranean, but changes east of the Cascades. Seattle, the largest city in the state experiences cloud cover a majority of the year. Wherever you decide to call home, Washington offers residents prosperous business opportunity and a peaceful environment in which to enjoy all the state's splendor.

Capital City: Olympia is the capital of Washington.

Population: Currently, 6 million people reside in Washington.

Local Activities: The Space Needle, in Seattle, was built in 1962 and served as the symbol of that year's World's Fair. It has since become the symbol of Seattle, and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. Or, check out the Seattle Waterfront, with its numerous tourist shops and the Alaskan Way Viaduct thundering overhead. Don't forget about, Washington's, award-winning, Woodland Park Zoo. located just minutes from busy downtown, the zoo allows visitors to you step into an African savanna, an Asian elephant habitat and a tropical rain forest. The zoo also brings special exhibits, which have included butterflies and other insects. Olympic National Park, in Port Angeles, compasses mountains and the sea, with temperate rainforests and largely undisturbed ecosystems. It is 95 percent wilderness, with virgin old-growth forests and untouched land. There are few roads or services, and accommodations are mostlylimited to campsites with fireplaces and rest rooms, but walking the trails is well worth the effort.

Economy: Once most famous for its acres of timber and lumber production, Washington is most noted today as the corporate home to such hi-tech industries as Boeing, Microsoft, Nintendo of America and Amazon.com. Tourism is another major industry offering scenic attractions along its Pacific Northwest coastline and more outdoor adventures inland with excellent skiing, hiking and mountain climbing.

Washington's huge food processing industry is based on the state's diversified irrigated farming and dairying as well as on its abundant fishing resources. Salmon is the biggest catch, but halibut, bottomfish, oysters, and crabs are also significant.

State Bird: The Willow Goldfinch is the state bird.

State Tree: The state tree is the Western hemlock.

State Flower: The state flower is the coast rhododendron.

State Song: "Washington, My Home" is the state song. It was written by Helen Davis
