State To State Moving

Olympia, Washington

Surrounded by greeneries and lush parks, Olympia, Washington attracts intrastate and interstate movers with its natural beauty. The name Olympia was coined after the Olympic Mountains that provide a majestic view up north. Although it is a modern metropolis, residents of Olympia still enjoy outdoor recreations from beach strolling and trekking, to skiing in the mountains. With a population of 46,100, the city’s lower cost of living continues to attract people moving from more expensive cities.

Economy:
Olympia was home to a progressive lumber industry and oyster farming at the early part of its development. As the demand for lumber waned, the milling structures and small farms were replaced with housing projects for state employees. Being the capital city, Olympia employs 23,000 people for the state government and its military workforce. Tourism is also part of the government’s supported sector that brings hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Manufacturing companies like Albany International Corp., Dart Containers Inc., Amtech Corp. and Big Toys Inc. are also located in the area.

History:
In 1791, British Captain George Vancouver discovered the Puget Sound Bay where Olympia lies. The first American settlement was established in 1846 by partners, Edmund Sylvester and Levi Lathrop Smith. The place was first named Smithfield by Levi Lathrop Smith and was later changed to Olympia in honor of the Olympic Mountains as suggested by Isaac N. Ebey. A city was laid out and it became the largest settlement in the Washington territory and was declared as its capital, with Isaac Stevens serving as the first territorial governor who lived there. Coal was discovered in 1850s, the lumber industry grew and Olympia also became a maritime center of commerce in the Puget Sound area. Washington gained statehood in 1889 giving way for Olympia to prosper and grow into a bustling city being officially declared as the capital of the state.

Tourism:
Although Olympia is surrounded with forested parks, one can enjoy a variety of activities from outdoor recreations, museums, and historic building tours to saltwater beaches here. Watershed Park, Ellis Cove Trail and Priest Point Park, and the Percival Landing Boardwalk are venues for outdoor activities. The Bigelow House built in 1860 by Daniel Bigelow that houses original Victorian artifacts and the Olympia's Hands on Children's Museum are the city’s cultural offerings. Olympia also boasts its own domed capitol that took 30 artisans to design. April's Procession of the Species that celebrates arts and the natural wonders is the first of a series of festivals and events in the city including Olympic Air Show in June and Parade of Lighted Boats in December.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • The world's first soft-serve ice cream machine was located in a Dairy Queen in Olympia.
  • The domed capitol of Washington in Olympia is the last capitol constructed in the U.S.
  • Olympia doesn’t have personal income tax, corporate and inventory tax.
