Moving Guide - Planning your move!

Settling In
Settling into your new home goes beyond unpacking your belongings. You have yet to personalize your home, become acquainted with your town or meet your local community. Soon enough, your new neighborhood will begin feel like home. Here are a few tips we have to offer to help you settle in once you arrive:
  • Go out and explore; locate your local grocery store, shopping center, library, etc. It may be helpful to do a web search on your town or obtain a map. The sooner you become familiar with your town, the sooner you will begin to feel comfortable there.
  • Inquire with the department of sanitation about recycling programs or trash collections in your community. You will be accumulating a lot of trash when unpacking and cleaning your new home, so find out what day the garbage trucks make their rounds.
  • Arrange to sign up with new service providers such as cable, electric and phone companies. Also remember to transfer any prescriptions to a local pharmacy and, if necessary, open a new account with a nearby bank.
  • Locate your new workplace so that you are familiar with your everyday work route and know the length of time if takes you to get there.
  • Visit local synagogues or churches to determine which, if any, you would like to join.
  • If you have moved with your family, visit schools in your area so that you and your children can see the classrooms or meet with teachers.
  • When locating new physicians, provide them with your medical documents stating your medical history so that they can keep it on file for future reference.
  • If you have moved to a different state, arrange to exchange your driver’s license and register your vehicle.
  • Register to vote in your new city of residence.
  • Transfer insurance policies to your new agent. You may also wish to make a detailed list of your belongings, their value and coverage.
