Measure the space

Firstly, draw a rough sketch of the floor plan. You can use this to jot down room measurements as you take them. Note window and door openings as well as any bookshelves or fireplaces. There is no need to make this perfect, as this will not be the final version. Use a steel measuring tape to take the measurements of the room. When you are finished you are ready to create a more accurate to scale drawing.

Follow these steps to accurately measure the room.
  1. Measure the baseboard form one corner to another. Record the number to the quarter inch on your rough layout drawing of the room. Measure all walls from floor to ceiling and from side to side.

  2. Continue measuring from corner to corner until you have measured the entire room and recorded the measurement on you layout drawing.

  3. Measure all the door openings in the room and indicate which way the door opens on your layout drawing.

  4. Measure the windows from outside edge to edge to include the frame. Measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the window frame and the distance from the window to the corner of the wall and include it in your layout drawings.

  5. Measure all built-ins, including bookshelves, brackets, and of course fireplaces. Include all dimensions in your layout drawings.

  6. Measure the locations of all electrical outlets, light switches and any other fixtures on the walls.
