State To State Moving

Wichita Falls, Texas

Those moving to Wichita Falls will find so much more to this city than you ever expected. From the family-friendly water park, to a nature center, to live hockey, why there is even a local Texas winery to explore. Before you make the move to Wichita Falls here is some helpful information about this exciting area.

History:
Wichita Falls took its name from the Wichita River which in turn was probably named by the Choctaw Indians who had resided in the area for many decades before the cattle ranchers arrived. The town was officially proclaimed on September 27, 1872 when a sale of town lots was held. With the coming of the Fort Worth and Denver railroad in 1882, Wichita Falls began to develop westward of the rail siding. The original waterfalls were washed away in the 1886 flood, and it took almost a century for townsfolk to build a replica in Lucy Park. Up to then, many visitors had expressed disappointment when arriving in Wichita Falls to find there were no falls in sight. Nature was again unkind to the city when devastating tornados hit Wichita Falls in 1964 and again in 1979, the latter resulting in many fatalities owing to the storm arriving in peak travel time for people returning home.

Economy:
A number of oil companies have their headquarters in Wichita Falls. Moreover oil-field machinery and plant manufacture is also a leading industry in the city. Transportation equipment, electronics and electrical equipment, and production of wood, metal, plastic, rubber and foam goods are also in evidence. Agriculture and ranching are also still important to the city’s economic well being. The Sheppard Air Force Base, which is close to Wichita Falls, is an important employer in the area too.

Tourism:
Before you visit this fine city, take time to look at the Wichita Falls Convention & Visitor Center website for news of events and up coming attractions. From fine dining to niche shopping, to entertaining nightlife, you are bound to find it all in Wichita Falls. The city hosts a variety of yearly events, including concerts, conventions and agricultural shows and the ideal hosting venue is the Multi-Purpose Events Center.
