Johnson City, Tennessee

For close to 200 years later Johnson City, Tennessee, has been a center for tourism and commerce in the northeast of the state. Those moving to Johnson City will find that it is positively alive with invigorating music - it is folk friendly and multi-cultured, so what are you waiting for.

History:
Founded in 1856 by Henry Johnson as a railroad station called “Johnson’s Depot,” Johnson grew into a railway hub for the southeast when three incoming railroad networks converged on it. Notwithstanding railroads and mining interests flourishing for a two-decade period from 1870, Johnson City’s boomtown experience was halted temporarily by the national depression of 1893. Early in the 20th Century though, developments again began with the construction of a 450-acre Campus for disabled Civil War veterans and Schools and Colleges soon followed. Meantime, the City became famous as a hotbed for fashionable music with Columbia Records keenly holding recording sessions in Johnson City in the late 1920s. During the Prohibition Era, Johnson City developed a reputation for bootlegging, and rumors surfaced that notorious mobster Al Capone was active in the City too. Fortunately, Johnson continued with impressive growth throughout the remaining decades of the 20th- and on into the 21st- Century, without relying on either Capone or the liquor trade!

Economy:
Thanks mainly to the “Med-Tech” Corridor and East Tennessee State University, Johnson City is the economic hub of this part of the State. Add the presence of the Franklin Woods Community Hospital, the Johnson City Medical Center, the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine and one quickly sees what drives the local economy. Moreover, the list grows even longer with no less than seven major companies being headquartered there – no doubt the reason for the Forbes accolade “35th Best Small Place for Business and Careers” in the country. And let us not forget that Johnson City is a favorite tourist destination which in itself creates jobs and wealth. Seven local employers have more than 1,000 employees on their payrolls, and this diverse base shields Johnson City somewhat from the vagaries of economic downturns.

Tourism:
Tourism is what Johnson City perhaps does best! For the motoring enthusiast try the nearby Bristol Motor Speedway & Dragway that hosts regular events. Or you could awaken your pioneer spirit when you visit historic districts and living history sites. Plenty of family fun abounds in Johnson City too, thanks to more outdoor activities that you can imagine, plus fun and entertainment in the downtown hub. Shops and restaurants are plentiful and just waiting to impress you and the family. Visit the Johnson City Convention & Visitors Bureau for a complete list of all the action.

Colleges/Universities:
