Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Murfreesboro, Tennessee is known for its generous quality of life and high-standard of living. Named the "Most Livable Town in Tennessee," Murfreesboro is the fastest growing city in the state and it's not hard to see why. Those moving to Murfreesboro will discover plentiful housing, excellent schools, employment opportunities, outstanding services, recreational programs and regional medical facilities.

History:
Incorporated in 1817, Murfreesboro was named the capital of Tennessee a year later since it was more centrally located than the original capital of Knoxville. By 1826, the capital was moved once again to Nashville. In its early years, Murfreesboro’s economy was based on farming, with corn, cotton, and tobacco becoming the most important crops. In the mid-19th century, Murfreesboro developed into the market center for Rutherford County, attracting a number of enterprising Jewish immigrants from the German states of Bavaria and Wurttemberg.

In 1811, the Tennessee State Legislature appointed a committee to select a new site for the Rutherford County seat. In 1817, "Murfreesboro" was recognized as an official city by the State Legislature and, in 1818, was named the capital of Tennessee. However, Nashville regained title as the State capital in 1826. In the early years of Murfreesboro, it was mainly an agricultural community, with corn, cotton, and tobacco being the main crops. By 1853, the Murfreesboro area was home to three colleges and several academies, prompting it to be called the "Athens of Tennessee" by a visiting religious reporter. Although education suffered from the military occupation and the trauma of the Civil War, by the early 1900's it began to regain momentum. Today, Middle Tennessee State University is the home of 23,000 plus students and has the highest undergraduate enrollment in the state. After WWII, Murfreesboro and Rutherford County began to change from an agricultural based economy to industrial and manufacturing. In the past decade, Murfreesboro has enjoyed substantial residential and commercial growth.

Economy:
Murfreesboro is set to become Tennessee's new business address. It is home to one of Tennessee's fastest growing universities, which offers a diverse education for today and tomorrow's highly skilled workforce. It is home to a wide array of residential and commercial development options, along with some of the finest schools in Tennessee. It is home to public and private sectors committed to working together to stimulate and encourage new business development and growth. The economic outlook for the city is excellent as employment opportunity continues to expand. In a memorandum of understanding negotiated this year, Murfreesboro plans to take over at least the fire service portion of the VA's activities; in return, Murfreesboro will sign a 70-year lease on the nine-hole VA golf course and make much-needed improvements in the area. Middle Tennessee Medical Center is located in Murfreesboro and provides hospital care for patients from Rutherford, Cannon, Coffee, Bedford, Warren and DeKalb counties.

Tourism:
Begin your exploration of the city by heading to Stones River National Battlefield. This historical site is the scene of a significant 1862 Civil War battle fought by 81,000 soldiers for control of middle Tennessee. The site is an outstanding place to begin and perfect for the entire family. Next, take the young ones to the Discovery Center. This children’s museum offers learning and discovery through interactive exhibits and alluring displays. Spend the day exploring the museums and all it has to offer. Next, head over to Oaklands Historic House and Museum. This museum offers visitors a look inside local history. Walk the halls and enjoy the presentation of local history like nowhere else in Murfreesboro. Finally, for the shopper in the group, head over to Stones River Mall where you can shop until you drop. This mall offers you everything from quaint boutiques to some of you biggest major retailers. Shop until you heart is content, then sit down for lunch or dinner at one of the areas many restaurants and diners.
